As a survivor in the first pages, we know that hanged or not, she was dead. The taint was killing her just as assuredly as the noose would have.
Also, interesting how the “human” dies. The vampire obviously does a number of mental changes. A new one may go berserk on hunger, but afterwards they can still act fairly human. So what changes occur?
