I have horrible posture… I blame all my work on my laptop. Ironically, I was in the last two poses for the majority of the time while making this comic.
I’m getting the feeling that we should savour this comic while we can, before repetitive strain injuries put a stop to it.
lol I’ve already got CTS from animating >_< Kitty and I tend to hurt ourselves that way :\
Hahah. I know how you feel, I always fall back into the same positions.
Same goes for when i’m sitting. 😛
Don’t you love how it’s not even noticed until your body is screaming at you? 😉
A Wacom tablet’s not really meant to be used with a laptop. It’s meant to be used at a desk, off to the side of the keyboard in place of a mouse.
Putting the computer on a folding tray-table and planting the Wacom on your knees instead may help with maintaining a decent posture. If you’re shifting position a lot, take breaks every so often, get up and walk around for a bit.
ah but it is oh so helpful to those without a desktop 😀 and don’t worry, all of Kitty’s friends (myself included) are there to smack her to take breaks. heh
Well, there you are then.
I’m serious about the tray-table, though, or a microwave cart; they’re about the same height. Get the computer out of her lap so she can use that space for the Wacom. If she needs the keyboard closer (no need for a track-pad with the Wacom), you can get a good USB one for $10. Plus, raising the screen onto a table will also be better for her neck, or if that couch happens to face a 1080p television, a DVI cable will let you use that big-screen as a monitor.
There are a few webcomics out there which have gone in major hiatus and eventually come back with reduced schedules after developing injuries caused or exacerbated by the arrangement of their workspace. With the exception of that stupid keyboard layout (the ‘6’ does not belong with the left hand), ergonomics (as a science, rather than as an aesthetic) really is your friend…
If she uses the keyboard heavily while painting but only a few specific keys (and it’s not out of budget), a couple of the gaming hardware companies make “speedpads” (Razer, Logitech) you can configure to fill that role, which take up a lot less space than a full keyboard.
Thank you so much for the great advice! I really appreciate your concern and will definitely look into some of your recommendations And trust me, I know all too well the bane of many webcomic hiatuses. Definitely do not want to make that a habit for P-Flux. Seeing as my day job also forces me to be at a computer for most of the day I have to be especially careful!
